My paintings are reflections, a single thought, a mood, a conversation on canvas, back and forward. A dance between colors, with movement and energy.
The start of a new painting is always a very exciting moment for me. The blank canvas is waiting for my ideas and decisions about where to start and what to paint.
My influences and inspirations are found everywhere in the daily life around me, in large part from the beauty of nature and also by a lifelong emotional connection with the ocean.
I’m primarily an abstract expressionist painter. I enjoy the freedom to express my feelings and emotions and working intuitively. Listening to music and making meditative strolls along the shore are ways to get in contact with my subconscious before I can let flow the energy. The whole process during the making of the painting is a very challenging one with all kind of emotions. Making abstract art is my way of communication without words.
Acrylic is my main medium but I also love to work with oil and cold wax, a complete different technique and approach. I’m always learning and exploring new techniques that push me further with each new piece. As my life changes, so does my work.
Hilma was born and raised in the Netherlands. While living on Bonaire and Curacao many years ago, she started to paint, impressed by the deep turquoise sea, the old characteristic buildings and the rich history of the Islands. Painting and working with driftwood became her passion and marked her start as an artist.
In the past 17 years Hilma followed multiple art classes and workshops offered by established and successful artists. She has learned to work with very different techniques, styles and materials. After many years of painting, she made the transition from representational to more abstract art.
While Hilma’s work is generally non-objective, it sometimes also depicts hints of a seascape or flowers in abstract form, leaving room for the imagination to tell its own story.
Over the years she developed her own “unique voice” coming deep from inside. Sometimes it’s full of vibrating energy and sometimes there is a sense of mystery and serene stillness what makes you wonder what’s going on in the mind of this artist. You can always feel her passion and she takes you with her energy, into her own created world.
Hilma currently spends her time between South Florida and Curacao.
